From a small, dedicated team of four in 2001, the Deakin Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition has rapidly grown into one of Australia’s most influential research institutes in health, sport and nutrition.

Over the past two decades, we’ve established ourselves as a trusted leader in physical activity and nutrition research, building a strong reputation for translating evidence directly into policy and partnering with communities to create healthier futures.

Our journey

  • 2001 – The Physical Activity and Nutrition Research Unit (C-PAN) was established at Deakin University with just four researchers.
  • 2003 – Officially launched by the Governor of Victoria, the Hon. John Landy AC as the Centre for Physical Activity.
  • 2004 – Recognised as a University Research Priority Area.
  • 2010 – Elevated to a Strategic Research Centre with 40 staff and an expanding portfolio of projects.
  • 2016 – Designated with University Research Institute status and formally named the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN).
  • 2022 – Established the Baker-Deakin Department of Lifestyle and Diabetes to address the growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes.
  • 2023 – Established a dedicated Consumer Network to bring the voice of lived experience to our research.
  • 2024 – The Centre for Sport Research (C-ISR) was integrated into the Institute, broadening our expertise in sport-related health.
  • 2025 – IPAN celebrated its 10th year as Deakin’s first health research institute, marking more than two decades of advancing public health.

The research unit then became a Strategic Research Centre in 2003 before being named Deakin's first health institute in 2010.
